AND MANY MORE COUNTRIES TO COME...
There are four major types of coal:
1. Anthracite/Metallurgical/Coking/Hard Coal: the highest rank of coal. It is a hard, brittle, and black lustrous coal, often referred to as hard coal, containing a high percentage of fixed carbon and a low percentage of volatile matter.
HS Code: 27011100.
GAR: > 6500 Kcal/Kg
Example of use:
* as one of raw material in steel production.
* as one of raw material to make carbon fibers.
For number 2, 3, and 4 below we called them Steam / Thermal Coal:
2. Bituminous: coal is a middle rank coal between sub-bituminous and anthracite. Bituminous coal usually has a high heating (Btu) value. Bituminous coal is blocky and appears shiny and smooth when you first see it, but look closer and you might see it has thin, alternating, shiny and dull layers.
HS Code: 27011200.
GAR: 5800 - 6500 Kcal/Kg (ICI 1-2).
Example of use: as fuel to cook cement. It needs 450 grams of coal to cook 900 grams of cement.
3. Sub-bituminous: coal is black in color and is mainly dull (not shiny). Sub-bituminous coal has low-to-moderate heating values.
HS Code: 27011900.
GAR: 4165 - 5700 Kcal/Kg (ICI 3-4).
Example of use: as fuel to boil water producing high pressure steam to drive turbine to generate electric power.
4. Lignite: coal, aka brown coal, is the lowest grade coal with the least concentration of carbon. Lignite has a low heating value and a high moisture content. It is the cheapest grade of coal.
HS Code: 27021000.
GAR: < 4165 Kcal/Kg (ICI 4-5).
Example of use:
* as fuel for low budget electricity generation.
* as fuel for heating in brick kiln
* as fuel for heating homes and commercial rooms especially during winter season.
